Collect App | Digital Scrapbook Resources

Hey Friends!

Almost 7 years ago I failed at Photo-A-Day 365.  Up to that point in the year I’d done pretty well.  I’d only missed a few days in the first 3 months.  And I kept up on the scrapping side of it, a 2 page layout for each week.  But the truth is, it was HARD!  Hard to remember to take the photos.  Hard to take the time to upload them from my camera to my computer.  So easy to forget.  So easy for something to be more important.

However, now things have changed.  There is a good camera on my phone which means I have a good camera with me almost always.  And while I still enjoy scrapping the memories we make, I also like to document the little things that make up our days.  Back in December I learned about an app that might make it easier to be successful at Photo-a-Day or P365.  BUT, things were still crazy in my life.  So I downloaded the Collect app and decided to start on January 1st.  Amazingly 3 month later I am still going strong.  And it is super easy.  Every afternoon I get a reminder to take a photo if I haven’t taken one yet.  Before I go to bed, I choose my favorite photo of the day and add it the Collect app…during that time I am usually thinking about our schedule for the next day and planning for what photo I’d like to take the next day.

But I think my favorite part of the app is the story-telling portion.  There is a place with every photo to add just a bit of the story (and more space below if necessary).  This “forces” me to be concise in telling the story of the photos…or just what I was thinking at the time.

So what will I do with these photos?

  • Sometimes this is just one photo from an event and I’ll be scrapping it as usual.

15_01_20_5thbday_2post_blurred

  • Your photos can be exported as one large calendar (which can be scrapped)…

2015-03-23 09.30.42

  • Or individual cards with the journaling (which can be scrapped, or just printed as is and tucked in pocket pages)

2015-03-23 09.31.28 2015-03-23 09.31.52

I liked my calendar so much, that I’ve added more calendars that first one.  I don’t know how many calendars you can create, but I have 3 right now.  In addition to my main album, I set up a calendar to keep the screenshots of my Couch to 5K workouts.  (You don’t have to have a photo for every day.  And you can have more than one photo each day.)  I’ll use these photos when I scrap about this journey to improve my fitness level.

2015-03-23 09.26.07

And I set up a calendar for my ‘other’ venture: Illustrated-Faith.  I probably won’t ever scrap these photos because I have the original book.  But I like having them all in one place where I can see them.  It keeps me accountable and motivated.

2015-03-23 09.26.19

And next fall I’ll start a “kindergarten year” calendar for my son.

I love how it gets me thinking about the moments I want to capture to tell the story of our lives.

Getting Files from here to there and everywhere | Digital Scrapbook Resources

Need a copy of that layout on your phone to post to instagram?  Or a copy of that journaling card on your tablet to add to a #scraponyourphone layout?  Or this layout (PSD version) from the desktop to the laptop?  Now days we use so many devices that frequently we need to get a file from this device to that one.  Small files like a web sized layout can easily be emailed, but I have a couple of other favorite solutions that work for small files AND those large PSD files.  Both options store your files remotely so you can access them from any device connected to the internet.

Screen Shot 2015-02-21 at 10.43.45 AM

DROPBOX:

When you create a dropbox account, you’ll download an install a Dropbox folder on your computer.  Files you place in that folder will be available from your phone, tablet or any other computer with internet access.  On your phone/tablet you will need to install the free Dropbox app to access your files.  On another computer, you can access your files by logging in at dropbox.com.

You can also share files with others by sharing the link, or set up a “shared” folder(s) with those you want to collaborate with.

My favorite part of Dropbox is how it can automatically upload all of my photos to the “Camera Uploads” folder.  This is a quick and easy way to back up the photos I take on my phone or my camera (as well as my daughter’s and husband’s phones).  When you plug a camera or camera card reader into your computer after installing dropbox, a pop-up window appears asking if you want to add the photos to dropbox.  I have checked the ALWAYS box, so now mine happens automatically.  On my phone (and my family’s phones) I turned on auto upload in the settings.

PRICING:

2GB- Free

Up to 16GB- Free, if you refer a bunch of friends. With a basic free account, you get an extra 500MB per referral and you can earn up to 16GB total through this method.

1TB- $9.99 per month

googledrive

GOOGLE DRIVE:

When you set up your google drive, you’ll download an install a Google Drive folder on your computer.  Files you place in that folder will be available from your phone, tablet or any other computer with internet access.  On your phone/tablet you will need to install the free Dropbox app to access your files.  On another computer, you can access your files by logging in at dropbox.com.

You can also share files/folders with Google Drive.

My favorite part of Google Drive is how I can create or upload & edit files:  letters, spreadsheets, etc.  I’ve switched from using Excel to primarily using Google Sheets in my Google Drive.

PRICING:

15GB- Free

100GB- $1.99 per month

1TB- $9.99 per month

I do not use Google Drive OR Dropbox as a back-up service.  I believe that their pricing is cost prohibitive (I still use BackBlaze for that purpose) but for easy access across devices or between people, I use them all the time.

What Font does Chelle use? | Digital Scrapbooking Resources

Hey All, What is your goto font? Do you have a favorite for journaling?

Chelle has used the same font in her scrapbooking for many years. Recently she started using a new font for her journaling. When Chelle started scraping her font of choice was JH Kari. This font hasn’t been available for many years.

Earlier this year, she started transitioning her journaling font to When Ocean’s Rise by Kimberly Gershin. Click on the image if you want to learn more.

KGWhenOceansRiseSquare

I asked Chelle what other fonts were some of her favorites? Here’s what she said.

For journaling:  I love fonts with “character” lots of swirls and neat decorative elements, but the reality is, in blocks of text the most important feature is readability.  I had a font of my handwriting made, but it’s hard to read.  So a few years back I picked a font I loved:  Pea Jay (from Fonts for Peas)  But after I printed my first book I realized it wasn’t so easy to read in text blocks.  So I adopted another “simpler font”  JH Kari (no longer available).  And I still use that font on layouts from 2013 and before.  But beginning with 2014 I’m changing to KG When Oceans Rise.  It’s even a little MORE simple = readable in text blocks.

For Headlines:  My favorites are alphas.  (using the Copy & Close Script to quickly stack them on my layout and then arranging them in a fun way)  But if I’m not using an alpha, some of my favorite decorative fonts are:
Tiny Butler
HDV Comic Serif Pro
Mister Sirloin BTN Well
and any of the font sets at Font Diner.com

Hugs!
